چکیده

Ultrastructural analysis of cells can reveal valuable information about their morphological, physiological, and biochemical characteristics. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been widely used to provide high-resolution images from the surface of biological samples. However, samples need to be dehydrated and coated with conductive materials for SEM imaging. Besides, immobilizing non-adherent cells during processing and analysis is challenging and requires complex fixation protocols. In this work, we developed a novel dielectrophoresis based microfluidic platform for interfacing non-adherent cells with high-resolution SEM at low vacuum mode. The system enables rapid immobilization and dehydration of samples without deposition of chemical residues over the cell surface. Moreover, it enables the on-chip chemical stimulation and fixation of immobilized cells with minimum dislodgement. These advantages were demonstrated for comparing the morphological changes of non-budding and budding yeast cells following Lyticase treatment.

High Resolution Image with Multi-wall Carbon Nanotube Atomic Force Microscopy Tip (RESEARCH NOTE)

In this paper, a simple and reproducible approach for attaching the multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) to the apex of the atomic force microscope probe has been proposed. For this purpose, the dielectrophoresis method was applied due to its simple performance, cheapness and reliability. In this method, various parameters such as voltage, frequency, concentration of carbon nanotubes solution an...

Magnetic force microscopy using fabricated cobalt-coated carbon nanotubes probes

Magnetic force microscope ( MFM ) is a powerful technique for mapping the magnetic force gradient above the sample surface. Herein, single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) were used to fabricate MFM probe by dielectrophoresis method which is a reproducible and cost-effective technique. The effect of induced voltage on the deposition manner of carbon nanotubes (CNT) on the atomic force microscope (...

Solution Based Methods for the Fabrication of Carbon Nanotube Modified Atomic Force Microscopy Probes

High aspect ratio carbon nanotubes are ideal candidates to improve the resolution and lifetime of atomic force microscopy (AFM) probes. Here, we present simple methods for the preparation of carbon nanotube modified AFM probes utilising solvent evaporation or dielectrophoresis. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the modified probes shows that the carbon nanotubes attach to the probe apex as ...

Reinforcing Multi-Wall Carbon Nanotubes by Electron Beam Irradiation

To prepare the samples for Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) imaging and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) measurements, as-grown carbon nanotubes were dispersed in isopropanol and sonicated using HD2200 homogenizer with a power of 20W for 5 minutes. To characterize the nanotubes by HRTEM, a droplet of the suspension was put on a Cu TEM grid with a lacey C film. Alternatively, we deposited a d...

Dielectrophoretic force microscopy of aqueous interfaces.

A novel scanning probe microscopy technique has allowed dielectrophoretic force imaging with nanoscale spatial resolution. Dielectrophoresis (DEP) traditionally describes the mobility of polarizable particles in inhomogeneous alternating current (ac) electric fields. Integrating DEP with atomic force microscopy allows for noncontact imaging with the image contrast related to the local electric ...
